MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK
Murchison Falls was established in 1952 and is one of Uganda’s first national game parks sitting on 3840 square kilometres located in Masindi. The Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge and plunges with a thunderous roar into the Devil Cauldron below creating a rainbow below.
Murchison falls is unhabituated by 556 bird species,144 mammals,51 reptiles and 51 amphibians.
Being one of the largest reserves in Uganda and located at the northern end of the Albertine rift valley with some escarpment with dotted savannah with the southern part well patched with trees. The Northern part is well covered by Savannah and Borassus palms plus acacia trees and riverine woodland.
The bisection of the Victoria Nile plunges over 45m over the rift valley wall creating the thunderous falls of the Murchison and over 80km of rapids that flow across the rift valley floor into the Lake Albert.
The riverbanks can be spotted with elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes and permanent inhabitants of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and dozens of aquatic birds, the white crested turaco, red winged warbler in the southern banks with the shoebill in the biggest number. Having a good Buffalo population of over 10,000 and more than 35,000Uganda Kobs.
